Tony Hendra: Correction: It's Not Their Country, It's Their Continent
My post last Friday about immigration garnered a teeny-tiny tsunami of response (at least compared to my previous more satirical efforts) prompting me to wonder if it might be better to cast aside the craft of a lifetime and join the rant-ocracy like everyone else. Here in no particular order are some reactions:
The assumption was repeatedly made that it was 'Mexicans' I was talking about, a word which -- although it's a straight-ahead descriptor -- seems to be getting perilously close to all those other fun epithets like 'mick', 'kraut', 'guinea', 'limey' etc. that right-thinking people don't use anymore in mixed company. Actually I wasn't particularly: the 'illegals' I know tend to be from further south, where genocide is still practiced from time to time (See below)....Full post... (read more)

Andy Stern: For the Times They Are A-Changin'
You know the winds of change are blowing when U.S. Chamber of Commerce head Tom Donahue, of all people, stands side-by-side with me, a labor leader, in Washington to jointly call for realistic and comprehensive immigration reform that would restrict the ability of employers to exploit the 11 million undocumented workers in this country.
Or when South Carolina's Lindsey Graham, a conservative from a non-border state home to remarkably few immigrants, signs on to legislation that includes a pathway to citizenship co-authored by his liberal Senate colleague from Massachusetts, Ted Kennedy....Full post... (read more)

Steve Cobble: Evan Bayh: Putting White People First
The Washington Post reports today that Senator Evan Bayh has come out against allowing any diversity in the early voting states for the 2008 Democratic primary nomination.
Let me translate into English--Evan Bayh is sucking up to New Hampshire's political crowd.
Further translation--Evan Bayh is telling the base of the party--African Americans and Latinos--to buzz off. He's telling our best voters they can wait for the two extremely White states of Iowa & New Hampshire to decide who the nominee is--then they can have a chance....Full post... (read more)

Arianna Huffington: Sunday Roundup
This was the week when everyone -- elected officials, pundits, and, yes, bloggers -- was taken aback by the forces unleashed over immigration, memorably captured in the images of half a million people surging through Los Angeles. Read HuffPost takes on this by Max Blumenthal, Jamie Court, Robert Scheer, and Tony Hendra. And "in another part of the wood," why have the MSM ignored the amazing Murray Waas story about the Hadley memo? It's shocking to all who have wondered for years if Bush is Reagan redux and would always claim deniability. On other stories, check out Bob Borosage, Peter Daou, and Robert Elisberg on the Democrats' national security plan, Steve Cobble, RJ Eskow, and Ari Melber on the Feingold censure hearing, and Jim Pinkerton, Robert Schlesinger, and Rachel Sklar on the administration's revival of the Iraq - al Qaeda spin....Full post... Harry Shearer: Conflict? Interest? Moi-SPN?
The three most laughable words in Hollywood have long been "conflict of interest". For details, check into the Anthony Pellicano case now unfolding. But the sports world has not been far behind in refusing to acknowledge such conflicts--see the Chicago Tribune Company's continued ownership of the Chicago Cubs. Nothing, however, could have prepared even the most jaded observers--sportswriters--for what's happening at Disney's ESPN. ...Full post... (read more)
