Adam Hanft: Beautiful Balkanization; California and Massachusetts Set their Own Progressive Agendas. Who Needs Washington?

Many progressives are still suffering from post-traumatic States' Rights Syndrome. Imprinted by the battles that southern states fought against the Civil Rights movement by wrapping themselves in an anti-Federalist banner, they're gripped by an instinctive chill when local legislators take matters into their own hands.

Nor are they without reason to feel icy. Across the country, we've seen a well-organized conservative movement grab control of local school boards in order to toss out the teaching of evolution and legitimize Intelligent Design, a better-packaged Creationism. "Progressive", or just Mexican partisans?

The reader is strongly encouraged to do some research on the California legislature and determine whether it's a bit too "progressive" for their taste. One of the more "progressive" members is Assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg. Around 1965 she was "a member of the Policy Committee for the next World Communist Youth Festival". She had other Communist links as well. Now, all of that might be considered water under the bridge if not for the actions of her comrades, many of whom frequently act more like Mexican legislators than American legislators. For instance, Gil Cedillo constantly tries to give driver's licenses to illegal aliens. In the past, he's tried to give illegal aliens a better deal than everyone else on car impound fees. And, despite his current talking point, in the past he's made it quite clear what this is all about: he wants to give Mexican citizens DLs because "they were here first." That's a quote right out of the MEChA playbook, and he's a former member of that group. A former legislator (Vasconcellos) saw no problem with Mexico reclaiming California. Another former legislator (someone eulogized here by Tom Hayden) went to Mexico and specifically told them he supported DLs for IAs so they could get benefits from California. And, the "progressives" in the legislature even passed a resolution supporting foreign citizens marching in our streets demanding rights to which they aren't entitled. Is what they support "progressive", or something else entirely? CNAP
